We never know when a natural disaster might strike, and it’s during those times that our water supply can become tainted and diseases such as typhoid and cholera can take over. But here are a few herbs and treatments that can help. Everyone might want to keep these herbs on hand in their herbal medicine cabinet just in case something happens, and also print this out and have it around just in case.
Cholera and typhoid are usually caused by drinking contaminated drinking water.
Symptoms of Typhoid - Typhoid bacteria spreads from the intestines and can move into the blood stream and then on into organ systems. Typical symptoms are weakness, fever, headache and stomach pain. As typhoid gets worse symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, don’t feel like eating, skin rashes, bloody stools, chills, hallucinations, and lethargy set in. Symptoms usually get better in 2 to 6 weeks with treatment.
Symptoms of Cholera - The symptoms of cholera are stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps, low blood pressure, feeling restless, shock, organ systems failure, and feeling very weak. Symptoms usually last for a few days with treatment but a person can carry the bacteria infecting other people for months.
And just because a person lives in a big city does not mean that these diseases can’t take over, they can, and have in the past. Even our great president Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wonderful wife came down with typhoid in the middle of a big city.
Remember always go to a doctor as soon as possible!
Andrographis – Andrographis Paniculata or as some call it “The King of Bitters” is great. And bitter things are good for you, you need bitter in your body to keep things in balance. Andrographis Paniculata is a plant that grows in the tropics and is a great antibiotic, anti-inflammatory helping with arthritis, sinusitis, and other inflammatory conditions. It also works well in the treatment and prevention of cancer and reducing tumor growth, plus studies show it inhibits the growth of colon cancer cells. Andrographis is also a super powerful antibacterial and anti-viral agent thus helping to heal and prevent disease.
Normal dose for andrographis for healing is 400 mg twice a day for up to 10 to 15 days. Then take a week off and if needed take another round of andrographis if needed. But remember this is a powerful antibiotic thus probiotics should be taken at the same time and for 30 days after using andrographis.
Take 4 capsules of probiotics 3 or 4 times a day for 30 days after using andrographis. Andrographis is a powerful herb and might cause side effects with some people with large doses such as stomachaches, fatigue, diarrhea, headaches, and lymph node pain. Andrographis can be found on-line by googling “Buy Andrographis Powder” and lots of places will come up. And it can also be found on Amazon and eBay.
Other Herbs – Also there are other herbs that are good antibacterial agents such as goldenseal, oregon grape, paduco bark, garlic, ginger, cloves, fenugreek, onion, lemon juice and zinc supplements also speed up recovery and more that will help.
For healing cholera and also with typhoid one of the main challenges is diarrhea so it’s vital to use the following steps.
Boil All Drinking Water - Boil all water for at least 30 minutes and if not sure go for a longer period of time with a full rapid boil. Then let cool and drink… boiling kills all the pathogens in the water. If you are at a high altitude double the boiling time.
Drink Lots of Fluids - It’s important to drink lots of fluids because with diarrhea people lose lots of fluids and electrolytes.
Hydration is Super Important – Keep yourself hydrated, with water, juice, anything you can keep down. At first, if the fluids just run through that is OK… just keep drinking fluids. Also electrolytes are important (potassium and sodium) are important and you can get those naturally from moringa and chlorella which have just about every kind of nutrient you need. Make a soothing hot moringa tea… it will help in great ways.
Make a Fluid Replacement Drink - Take 4 cups of boiled— sanitized filtered water and add 1/2 teaspoon of table salt and 6 level teaspoons of sugar. Mix well and drink this liquid often while sick. Not having enough fluids in a person’s system can quickly lead to death.
Use Cold Compresses to Lower Fever - Take a washcloth and get it wet and place it on the person’s forehead to help lower fever. Good old aspirin or white willow bark powder is a great fever reducer and also the herb feverfew is a good fever reducing herb.
Lots of Bed Rest - Getting up and moving around is not good when the body needs to rest. Stay in bed, rest, allow the body to recoup and when you feel better then get up and move around. Sometimes we need to vertical and other times we need to stay horizontal.
Wash Hands Often – One of the main reasons people come down with diarrhea is not washing their hands often enough. You can use one of those alcohol gels if you don’t have much water, or use a splash of alcohol, or the simplest is plain old soap and water… it will do the trick. And wash your hands for a long time, here is a little trick, sing happy birthday in your head twice while washing your hands… that will give you enough time to wash your hands very clean. And also sanitize everything around you as best as possible.
Sanitation is Important – Also if your emergency situation means that the sewers system is not working, then you may need to dig a simple septic system (outhouse) that will take care of your needs for awhile. Dig down as deep as you can, 6 feet or more and 1 1/2 in diameter is great. You can buy tablets of microbes that break down sewage in septic systems at your local home improvement center. Make sure to cover this emergency system to keep out insects and rodents, and keep the area as sanitary as possible. Otherwise, what will you do with your human waste? Think about this, it’s important! Also on youtube, there are some great videos on making outhouses, and about making bucket toilets.
Stay Away From – Stay away from high fiber foods, greasy foods, and sugary sweet foods (other than the sugar in the fluid replacement drink), all of these will cause diarrhea to get worse.
Take Turmeric – Turmeric also helps as a great antibacterial herb that will help get rid of invading microbes that cause diarrhea. Turmeric usually comes in 600 mg capsules and most people recommend taking 3 to 6 capsules twice a day. Or turmeric is a cooking herb and if you have turmeric as a ground spice in your spice rack… you can take a 1/2 teaspoon with a little juice to make it go down easy.
Drink Rice Water – I remember being in Mexico and coming down with diarrhea and the chef at the hotel cooked me up some simple white rice water. It was soothing and did the trick by stopping the diarrhea and making me fill better. Just boil a cup of white rice with 6 cups of water until the water becomes nice a milky white. Remove the rice and let the liquid cool… then drink as much of the liquid as you want to soothe your GI tract. This remedy really works well. And in emergency situations, white rice is one of the staples you’ll usually have on hand.
Drink Tea – Tea is one of the most soothing things for diarrhea, you can use black tea, green tea, fennel and anise tea which are good for gas and GI upsets. Some feel that tea with caffeine can upset the GI tract but lots of people find black tea soothing and it does have a relaxing agent (L-Theanine) which helps with stress, so YOU will have to decide about having tea or not. I drink black tea when I have Diarrhea and it works well for me.
Slowly Add These Foods – As you start to feel better slowly add some cooked None GMO rice, cooked applesauce, bananas, boiled potatoes, cooked carrots, None GMO crackers… and some None GMO bread. All food have to be cooked, peeled, or just plainly forget it— it’s not worth it.
Take Probiotics – It’s important to get a person on some sort of probiotic agent as soon as possible, perhaps yogurt, or any other food that contains good bacteria so that the GI tract can heal. You can also buy probiotic capsules in drugstores that work well.
Again - Remember Always Drink Purified Water – In emergency situations it’s absolutely important to drink purified water because water can carry bacteria and parasites that cause disease and diarrhea. Remember boil all water for 30 minutes or run it though a special sanitizing water filter that can be found at outdoor recreation stores and backpacking stores
Not Responding to Treatment? – If your diarrhea or other symptoms are not responding or get worse then go to a doctor as soon as possible. Remember these are life threatening diseases so please take them seriously.
Many Blessings to Everyone!
