Galangal root is also known as Alpinia galanga has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic Medicine and works wonders for all kinds of conditions and has no side effects. It helps with inflammation, increases circulation, prevents heart attacks, heals skin problems, slows the aging process, helps with GI upsets, lowers cholesterol, lowers blood sugar, helps with asthma and bronchitis, and so much more.
Where it Grows - Galangal root is related to ginger and turmeric but it’s a totally different species and it is widely used in cooking in Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and other countries. And galangal root has made its way to Europe and the US.
Easy to Grow - Galangal root grows like ginger and it’s very easy to grow. Just take some fresh roots and plant them in moist soil with lots of light and they will grow… but they like lots of water.
Powerful Anti-Inflammatory - Galangal root is a powerful anti-inflammatory that helps with aches, pains, swelling, and redness. And it also works well for arthritis, rheumatism, foot pains, joint pain, and other inflammatory conditions. And since inflammation is the first step towards disease… it’s very important to use anti-inflammatory foods and herbs on a regular basis.
Increases Circulation - Galangal root is great for increasing circulation in the body and thus helping to prevent cardiovascular disease, strokes, and other diseases. Studies in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria show that Galangal tea can help prevent heart attacks by increasing circulation to the coronary arteries.
Heals Skin Problems - Galangal tea also soothes away eczema, psoriasis, red and irritated skin, and fungal infections. Either drinking the tea or rubbing fresh slices of galangal root on the skin works.

Dose - As a powder up to 6 grams can be taken daily. As a tincture use, 20 drops 3 times a day. In capsules for motion sickness take 250 mg 3 times a day.
Forms - Galangal comes in powders, fresh root, capsules, cut dried root, fortified wines, tinctures, and more. If using the dried root soak the roots in water overnight before using.
Finding - Galangal root tea, capsules, powder, and other forms can be found at some health food stores, on Amazon, on eBay, and other places on-line.
Making Tea - Take a 2-inch piece of galangal and slice it thin, place the slices in a cup of boiling water and steep for 15 minutes and drink. If using powdered galangal take a 1/2 teaspoon of powder and place in a cup of boiling water and steep for 10 minutes and drink.
No Side Effects - Galangal tea or capsules in normal doses does not have any side effects. But it does slow down the release of lipase by the pancreas so use it in moderation like all herbs. But as always those who are pregnant, nursing, or small children should not take galangal root. I recommend taking all herbs for no more than 7 to 10 days and then taking a break… and then repeating if needed.
